Herons top Valiants in home opener

GENEVA, N.Y.–The William Smith College basketball team used a second half surge to run away from Manhattanville College, 104-71 in its home opener. Six Herons reached double-digits as William Smith scored 100 points for the first time in five seasons.

Junior forward Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) opened the scoring with a jumper 23 seconds into the contest and William Smith never trailed. With the game tied at four Hadwin connected on another jumper to start a 10-0 Heron run. With 12:34 remaining in the first half, the Valiants closed to within 19-15. William Smith responded with an 11-2 run started and capped by more Hadwin buckets. Manhattanville cut the Heron lead to 32-27 at the 3:48 mark, but trailed 44-36 at the break. Hadwin scored 17 of her game-high 20 points in the first half, while sophomore forward Kaleen Goodman (Corning East/Painted Post, N.Y.) scored all of her 12 points in the first 20 minutes, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

William Smith opened up the second half with a 24-4 run for a 68-40 advantage with 14:51 to go, en route to the 104-71 victory. After sitting much of the first half with foul trouble, senior center Leah Cornwell (Caledonia/Wheatland-Chili) scored all 14 of her points in the final period. Sophomore forward Heather Easter (North Carroll/Hampstead, Md.) narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Senior guard Jeanne Vinchiarello (Our Lady of Lourdes/Dover Plains, N.Y.) and first-year forward Ivy Parker (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.) also reached double-digits, netting 13 points apiece. William Smith forced 28 turnovers and outrebounded Manhattanville (0-5) 49-31.

The Herons (2-0) travel to SUNY-Fredonia on Nov. 26, for a 7 p.m., contest.
