GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team played a strong first half and did just enough after the break to improve to 2-0 with a 56-48 victory over visiting Keuka tonight in Bristol Gym. Junior guard Tara Brisson (Bishop Grimes/Liverpool, N.Y.) paced the Herons with 12 points.

The Storm (0-3) trailed by two with 12:21 remaining in the first half, but William Smith went on a 15-3 run to build a 14-point lead. Brisson and first-year guard Anne Hellebush (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) each contributed four points during the scoring burst.

Hellebush finished with eight points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.

The Herons led 33-21 at the break after knocking down 41.4 percent from the floor (12-29), including 3-of-7 from long range. Keuka, meanwhile, converted just seven of its 32 first half field goal attempts.

After the break, William Smith lost its scoring touch, connecting on just 7-of-25 from the floor, and misfiring on all nine of its three-point efforts. The Storm was unable to take advantage however, shooting just 36.4 percent after the break (8-22). Keuka shot just 27.8 percent for the game.

The Herons pushed their advantage to 15 at the 15:37 mark on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Tanya Richvalsky (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.). She finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Storm stayed within striking distance down the stretch, closing to within six with 49 seconds remaining on a free throw by sophomore forward Lindsay Baker (Scranton/Scranton, Pa.). She was the only Keuka player to reach double digits, posting game-highs in points (16) and rebounds (11).

First-year forward Ashley Rodger (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) led the Herons on the glass with 10 caroms to go with seven points.

William Smith is back in action at 2 p.m., on Dec. 6, when Ithaca visits Bristol Gym.
