January 11, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith College basketball team used a 40-0 first half run to knock out Vassar College 83-33 in its Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association opener. The Herons used stifling defense and double digits from four players to rout the Brewers.

A free throw by senior guard Bea Milligan (Lakota East/West Chester, Ohio) gave Vassar a 5-4 lead at the 16:31 mark. The advantage was quickly erased by a three-pointer from William Smith senior guard Jeanne Vinchiarello (Our Lady of Lourdes/Dover Plains, N.Y.) to start the 40-point Heron run. An aggressive William Smith defense kept the Brewers off the board until just 2:26 remained in the half, forcing 18 first half turnovers. William Smith senior center Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) scored 12 of her 14 points in the first 20 minutes, including eight during the run. The Brewers went 15:22 without a field goal and trailed 44-8 at halftime.

The Heron's didn't let up in the second half cruising to the 50-point victory. Junior forward Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. A trio of William Smith first-years had strong performances on the night. Forward Ivy Parker (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.) netted 11 points, guard Maria Atti (Kenmore East/Buffalo, N.Y.) scored 10, while guard Tracy Genovese (Geneva/Geneva, N.Y.) added a career-high seven. The Herons shot 48.4 percent from the floor and held the Brewers to just 21.9 percent, forcing 27 Vassar (6-4, 1-0 UCAA) turnovers. William Smith also controlled the boards with a 52-37 advantage.

The Herons (8-2, 1-0 UCAA) host Rensselaer Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. The Red Hawks swept the season series last year.
