Red Dragons top Herons, 61-54

January 20, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team held an 11-point half time lead, but the Cortland State Red Dragons staged a furious second half comeback to steal a 61-54 victory. The win raises Cortland’s record to 10-2, while the Herons fall to 6-6.

Trailing by 11 with 14:41 remaining in the second half, sophomore guard Kaylin VanDusen (West Canada Valley/Schuyler, N.Y.) strapped the Red Dragons on her back. She scored seven of her game-high 19 points during a 17-3 run that gave Cortland a three-point lead.

William Smith managed to forge a 51-51 tie with 6:38 left in the game, but VanDusen’s layup with 3:25 remaining put the Red Dragons back in front for good, 53-51.

The Herons had all of the momentum in the first half, shooting 44.8 percent from the floor, including 3-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc, but the pendulum swung the other way after the break. Cortland, which shot 38.1 percent in the first half, knocked down 48 percent after the intermission, while William Smith connected on just 33.3 percent.

First-year guard Anne Hellebush (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) led the Herons with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including three three-pointers, while first-year forward Ashley Rodger (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Senior forward Michelle Ciquera (Massapequa/Massapequa, N.Y.) added 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Cortland.
