GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team hung with second-ranked Rochester for 20 minutes, but the visiting Yellowjackets’ depth carried them to a 64-41 victory tonight in Bristol Gym.

The Herons (2-2) trailed by as many as 15 in the opening frame, but William Smith went on a 10-4 run in the closing 6:54 to trim its deficit to nine at the break, 33-24. The Heron defense deserves much of the credit of the surge, as Rochester (6-0) committed six of its 19 turnovers and attempted just four field goals down the stretch.

After the break, senior guard Erika Smith (Shaker/Latham, N.Y.) hit two three pointers in the first two minutes of the second session, leading an 8-2 Rochester run that put the Yellowjackets lead back in double digits, this time for good. She was one of three Rochester players in double digits, finishing the night with 11 points. Junior forward Kelly Wescott (Franklin Academy/Burke, N.Y.) led all scorers with 16 points, while junior center Megan Fish (Bethlehem/Glenmont, N.Y.) chipped in 12.

First-year forward Ashley Rodger (Waterloo/Waterloo, N.Y.) paced the Herons with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

William Smith is off until the New Year, when the Herons take on the College of Staten Island in the first round of the Williams Tournament on Jan. 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
