Skidmore upends William Smith, 59-49

February 8, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Skidmore College women’s basketball team overcame 26 turnovers thanks to some hot shooting to upset William Smith College, 59-49. The loss drops the Herons to 8-11 overall, 3-6 in the UCAA, while the Thoroughbreds improve to 6-14, 1-8.

William Smith led by as many as 10 in the first half, but a seven minute drought without a field goal saw that lead dissolve. From the 7:36 mark until first-year Tanya Richvalsky (Mohawk/Mohawk, N.Y.) converted a layup with 26 seconds remaining, the Herons missed five field goals and three free throws.

Meanwhile, Skidmore went on a 14-0 run with senior Andrea Paulsen (Saratoga Catholic/Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and first-year Lauren Jones (Gilbert/Winsted, Conn.) each contributing five points. Paulsen led all scorers with 22 points, while Jones added 17.

The Thoroughbreds led 27-25 at the break.

William Smith reclaimed the lead five and a half minutes into the second half on a layup by sophomore Tara Brisson (Bishop Grimes/Liverpool, N.Y.). The basket proved to be part of an 11-0 run that gave the Herons a nine-point lead, 40-31. Brisson, who finished with a team-high 15 points, capped the run with a jumper at the 12:01 mark. It was the last field goal William Smith made in the contest.

An 11-0 Skidmore run in the final seven minutes turned a four-point deficit into a seven-point Thoroughbred lead, 51-44. The Herons got no closer than five in the final three minutes.

Skidmore torched the nets, hitting on 53.8 percent of its shots from the floor, including 42.9 percent from beyond the arc. Conversely, William Smith struggled, hitting just 30.6 percent from the floor, including 6-of-24 in the second half.

Sophomore Lisa Mason (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) contributed 11 points, including three second-half three-pointers, for the Thoroughbreds, while senior Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) was the only other Heron in double digits (10 points).

William Smith returns to action on Feb. 14, at Clarkson. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
