Dutchwomen sink Herons, 59-49

February 1, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. -The Union College basketball team grabbed an early lead and held off William Smith for a 59-49 victory to snap the Herons five-game win streak. Senior center Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili/Scottsville, N.Y.) scored all 17 of her points in the second half to lead William Smith.

Just over four minutes into the contest, senior forward Heather Bennett (Westwood/Westwood, Mass.) scored on a layup to give the Dutchwomen a 3-2 lead and Union never trailed again. Cornwell was called for two fouls early and left the floor after only three minutes played in the half.

A jumper by first-year guard Eileen Lowry (Ramapo/Wyckoff, N.J.) at the 3:34 mark gave the Dutchwomen a 24-15 advantage, their biggest of the half, before the Herons charged back with an 8-0 run for a 24-23 deficit. Union called a timeout and successfully snuffed out William Smith's momentum, closing the half with a 6-0 run for a 29-23 lead.

Cornwell returned in the second half, immediately hitting a three to cut the lead to three, but the Herons couldn't get any closer. The Dutchwomen widened their lead to 14 with 10:40 to play and William Smith closed to within six points seven minutes later on a three-pointer from sophomore forward Heather Easter (North Carroll/Hampstead, Md.), but never threatened again as Union went on to the 59-49 win.

Junior forward Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y.) and first-year forward Ivy Parker (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.) each finished with 10 points for the Herons.

Three Dutchwomen (12-7, 4-4 UCAA) also reached double digits. Senior guard Katie Smith (Bethlehem/Delmar, N.Y.) netted a game-high 21 points, first-year guard Melissa Marra (Mechanicville/Mechanicville, N.Y.) scored 14 points, and first-year forward Katlyn Cunningham (Drury/Clarksburg, Mass.) posted the game's lone double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.

William Smith (13-4, 6-2 UCAA) returns to action Feb. 2, when Skidmore College (10-8, 2-6 UCAA) comes to Geneva for a 2 p.m. contest. The Herons defeated the Thoroughbreds, 61-50, in Saratoga Springs on Jan. 18.
