William Smith basketball hires assistant

GENEVA, N.Y. – William Smith College Basketball Head Coach Glen Begly recently announced the hiring of Erin Toohill, who will serve as an assistant coach for the Herons during the 2002-03 season. Toohill joins the Herons after earning a Master’s degree in elementary education from the University of Rochester. In the process of earning her degree, Toohill served as an assistant basketball coach for the Yellowjackets. She was responsible for teaching daily on-court conditioning and practice drills and assisting in game day preparations.

Prior to her graduate work, Toohill was a four-year member of the University of Rochester basketball team, leading the Yellowjackets to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship in 2001. She was an exemplary student-athlete at Rochester earning the U.S. Army Scholar Athlete Award as well as the Rochester National Grant.

Toohill was also an intern at The Administration for Children’s Services in New York City during the summer of her junior year where she assisted in the visiting improvement program and children of incarcerated parents program.

The Herons finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 17-10 record, earning a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate Regional Tournament. William Smith returns 10 players from last year’s squad, including, senior forward Laura Hadwin (Vestal/Vestal, N.Y) and sophomore guard Maria Atti (Kenmore East/Buffalo, N.Y.). Hadwin averaged 15 points and seven rebounds in 2001-02, while Atti contributed a solid eight points and six rebounds on average for the Herons.
