Young leads Herons past Vassar, 84-48

February 14, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team moved back over the .500 mark with an 84-48 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association win over visiting Vassar College this afternoon in Bristol Gym. Sophomore guard Pria Young (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) made the most of her first start this season, hitting all six of her shots from the floor, including four three-pointers, for a team-high 16 points in just 17 minutes of work for the Herons.

Seemingly over before it began, William Smith (11-10, 6-5 UCAA) scored the first five points of the game before Vassar (4-17, 1-10) recorded its first basket at the 17:46 mark. Over the next six and a half minutes the Herons posted 21 unanswered points to put the contest well out of reach.

The Herons shot a season-high 54 percent from the floor, the program’s best shooting performance since connecting on 55.4 percent against Fredonia on Nov. 26, 2001. William Smith boasted a 40-28 advantage on the boards and committed a season-low seven fouls.

Meanwhile, Vassar managed just six field goals in the first half on 25 attempts.

So dominating was William Smith’s first half performance, and Young’s in particular, that Young herself outscored the Brewers 14-12 in the opening 20 minutes.

Junior forward Ivy Parker (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.) turned in a fine performance off the bench with 13 points, seven boards, and six assists, while sophomore forward Morgan Kassel (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and first-year forward Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

For Vassar, sophomore forward Meredith McGair (St. Mary Academy-Bay View/Cranston, R.I.) scored a team-high 16 points on 7-of-19 shooting, while first-year guard Lizzie Evans (Pinewood School/Campbell, Calif.) added 15, including three trifectas.

William Smith is back in action at 6 p.m., on Feb. 17, when UCAA-rival Hamilton visits Bristol Gym. A crucial contest, the Herons sport a one-game lead over the Continentals (5-6) in the league standings for the fourth and final spot in the conference championship tournament.
