Kozarsky wins silver at Master's National Rowing Championships

WORCESTER, Mass.--William Smith sophomore coxswain Julie Kozarsky (Shawnee/Medford, N.J.), competing with the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association, won a silver medal in the men's D-F 8+ at the Master's National Rowing Championships in mid-August.

Battling high temperatures, humidity and an agressive heats schedule, Kozarsky's athletes held onto a second-place lead in the 1,000-meter race to finish behind champion Saugatuck Rowing Club. This was the young coxswain's first national championship. Kozarsky was a coxswain at both CLRA and the Penn Athletic Club over the summer. She won a handful of medals with CLRA at other smaller regattas.

"The races for Master's are only 1000 meters long, not 2000 as we are used to in the collegiate season," William Smith Head Crew Coach Sandra Chu said. "I am proud of Julie for stepping outside her comfort zone to take on the challenges of coxing such an intense race.

"As a novice last year, she was an incredibly fast learner and I know that the skills she learned at William Smith helped her a great deal on the water with Carnegie Lake. Mostly I am very excited about the new skills she has acquired and what she will bring back to the team in the fall. I anticipate that she will have an enormous impact on the team as a sophomore."

The Herons open the fall portion of their schedule on Oct. 1, with a head-to-head race against Ithaca at the Hellstrom Boathouse.
