GENEVA, N.Y—The William Smith College novice four was named the Liberty League Co-Boat of the Week after capturing the gold medal at the New York State Championships this past weekend in Whitney Point. This is the Herons’ second consecutive weekly award from the league after the varsity eight earned the honor last week.
First-years Jenn Kirst (The Principia Upper School/Darien, Conn.), Whitney Hayre (Sherwood/Olney, Md.), Cristina Mulcahy (St. Michael’s/Santa Fe, N.M.), and Cate Elgert (Bow/Bow, N.H.) and sophomore coxswain Ted Williams (Germantown Friends School/Blue Bell, Pa.) teamed up to outrace runner-up Army by nearly two seconds with a time of 8:05.74. Racing a combined seven times this season, the novice eight and novice four boats finished the 2005 season undefeated.
The Herons are back in action on May 7-8, at the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships in Worcester, Mass. The varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four boats will compete for William Smith.
