William Smith novices win Wylie Coyote Chase

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith crew team won the Wylie Coyote Chase, which took place on the Genesee River, this past weekend. The Heron novice eight finished first, while the second novice eight finished third. William Smith posted a time of 17:59, defeating the University of Rochester by 49 seconds.
Powered by first-years Kenzie Cannon (Berkshire/Canaan, Conn.), Anne Wakeman (Lawrence Academy/Marlboro, Mass.), Hannah Zale (Middlesex School/Boca Raton, Fla), Alice Bellone (Cohasset/Cohasset, Mass.), Kerry O’Neill (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), Alexandra Haack (St. Mark’s School/Bryn Mawr, Pa.), Christa Hibbard (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.), Alexandra Bowers (Tabor Academy/East Sandwich, Mass.), and Maya Eigel (Wellington School/Galloway, Ohio), the Herons’ demonstrated aggressive and clean strokes in a strong tailwind during their first away race.
The second novice eight, which was comprised of first-years Prabiya Basnet (Rati Bangala School/Kathmandu, Nepal), Becky Gosse (Cortland/Cortland, N.Y.), Zoe Larson (Ossining/Ossing, N.Y.), Emily Maguire (Miss Porter’s School/Madison, Conn,), Katherine Faherty (Deerfield Academy/Gloucester, Mass.), Allison Glueck (Miss Hall’s School/Wellington, Fla.), Jacqui Sands (Greece Arcadia/Rochester, N.Y.), Elisha Simmonds (Auburn/Auburn, N.Y.), and Emma Cochrane (Newton North/ Newton, Mass.), had some troubles in the starting chute, and were not allowed to get a good point off the line. They also caught a crab approximately 800 meters from the finish line, registering a time of 21:41.
“Assistant Coach Vanessa Sheehan’s leadership of the novice women is clearly shown in their strong performance today,” Head Coach Sandra Chu said. “Their success is a direct reflection of her skills and abilities as well as their hardwork, dedication, and passion for crew.”
William Smith returns to action on Oct. 23 when the varsity squad travels to Boston for the Head of the Charles.
