Herons begin busy racing weekend with 5 wins

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The William Smith crew team completed a successful day of racing, winning five of six races and finishing second in the sixth.
"We raced with a huge amout of composure," William Smith Head Coach Sandra Chu said. "The whole squad took a huge step in terms of their maturity as racing athletes."
The Heron varsity eight of Kenzie Cannon, Rebecca Gutwin, Frances Parsons, Cassie Priest, Jess Mahon, Edwina Wilson, Nicole Balsamo, Jenn Kirst, and Kerry O'Neill executed an aggressive race plan, covering the 2,000-meter course in a winning time of 7:16.06. The University of Vermont finished second, more than four seconds back. Skidmore was third, followed by Middlebury.
The novice eight of Caitlin Holtz, Alice Bellone, Hannah Zale, Anne Wakeman, Emily Helstowski, Becky Gosse, Emily Maguire, Allison Glueck, and Katherine Faherty posted a six-second victory. They had a winning time of 8:14.0, chased by Skidmore (8:20.12), Middlebury (8:45.63), and Vermont (9:23.94).
All three William Smith fours (varsity, second varsity, novice) earned open water victories over the competition.
The Heron second varsity eight of Julie Kozarsky, Alex Haack, Michelle Dodge, Lucinda Keck, Jess Wojslaw, Kathryn Loddengaard, Christa Hibbard, Alexandra Bowers, and Susan K. Tarrant trailed only the Catamount, but finished well ahead of Liberty League rival Skidmore and Middlebury.
William Smith is back on the water on April 23, in Worcester, Mass. The Herons will tangle with WPI, RPI, RIT and Tufts. Racing is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
