September 11, 2006

PRINCETON, N.J.—William Smith College Head Crew Coach Sandra Chu won a gold medal at the 2006 FISA World Masters Regatta. She was the coxswain for the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association in the Women's D8+ event.

The women's D8+ built a full boat length lead by the 500 meter mark. The CLRA held on to enough of that advantage to post a two-second victory over a composite international boat (mostly from London). CLRA crossed the line in 3:33.

Chu also competed in two other events, the men's E4+ and the womens's C4+. The women's C4+ finished second.

Chu won a Masters National Championship with CLRA in 1996.

The FISA World Masters races are 1,000 meters long and race categories are divided by age increment of five years, A through I. Chu's D8+ competed against other women's eights whose average age was between 45-50. The coxswain's age does not count.

Chu began racing with the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association more than a decade ago.
