GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior oarswoman Rebecca Gutwin (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.) represented the Herons on the 2006 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Pocock All-America first team. It is the second time in her career she has been named an All-American.
“Rebecca is the most focused student-athlete I’ve ever worked with,” William Smith Head Coach Sandra Chu said. “She’s consistently pushing herself to get to her next level of excellence.”
A team captain, Gutwin was the stroke in the varsity eight this season, guiding the Herons to their second consecutive Liberty League Rowing Championship. The Heron varsity eight placed second in the New York State Championships and was named the Liberty League Boat of the Week four times this season.
A 2004 second-team All-American, Gutwin was presented the Evaleen C. Harrison ’19 Scholar-Athlete Award at the annual William Smith Athletics Banquet. She was the recipient of the ECAC Award of Valor.
Gutwin, who graduated earlier this month with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in America. She earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic team in each of the past three seasons.
William Smith was ranked second in the NCAA region poll and 10th in the nation in the CRCA coaches poll. Since 2000, the Herons have earned 11 All-America awards. Gutwin is the fourth two-time All-American in William Smith history, joining Heather Hawkins ’03, Julie Deprez ’04, and Libby Weick ’04.
