4 weeks, 4 awards, Heron crew does it again

October 23, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith crew earned the Liberty League Boat of the Week award for the fourth consecutive week. At the Head of the Charles in the Collegiate 4+ event, the Herons were fourth out of 27 teams, covering the 3-mile course in 20:53.158.

Sophomore Alexandra Bowers (Tabor Academy/East Sandwich, Mass.), sophomore Kenzie Cannon (Berkshire/Canaan, Conn.), senior Michelle Dodge (St. Paul’s School/Jackson, N.H.), sophomore Emily Maguire (Miss Porter’s School/Madison, Conn.), and junior Jess Wojslaw (Norwalk/Norwalk, Conn.) were the second Division III boat across the line. Bucknell finished first followed by Penn State and DIII Simmons College.

Only 0.4 seconds behind Simmons, the Herons were 2.11 percent behind Bucknell’s winning time of 20:27.227, earning the team a guaranteed entry into the race for 2007. Last year, the Herons finished fifth in the Collegiate 4+ race, 2.34 percent behind the winner.

The William Smith varsity 8+ earned the Liberty League’s weekly award in each of the past two weeks, while the Heron novice 8+ won the first award of the season.

William Smith will close out its fall racing season on Oct. 28, when the Herons compete in the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
