Heron crew grabs 2nd straight weekly award

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith varsity 8+ was named the Liberty League Women’s Crew Boat of the Week after winning the bronze medal at the Head of the Genesee on Oct. 8. The Heron novice eight won the first League award of the season last week.
William Smith was third in the collegiate division and ninth overall. Senior Nicole Balsamo (Newton Country Day/Centerville, Mass.), senior Lauren Brady (Westover School/Ridgefield, Conn.), junior Hannah Gallup (Holy Names/Alameda, Calif.), junior Lucinda Keck (The Lawrenceville School/Pennington, N.J.), junior Jenn Kirst (Principia/Darien, Conn.), junior Julie Kozarsky (Shawnee/Medford, N.J.), junior Jessica Mahon (Rhinebeck/Rhinebeck, N.Y.), sophomore Kerry O’Neill (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), and sophomore Anne Wakeman (Lawrence Academy/Marlboro, Mass.) posted a championship time of 32:04.58, trailing Brock University of St. Catherines, Ontario (31:15.25) and defending Division III national champion Williams College (31:03.01). The Herons bested boats from Ithaca and Rochester among others in the collegiate division.

The Head of the Genesee features a 5-kilometer head race in the morning and a 1,500-meter sprint in the afternoon. The afternoon time is multiplied by three and added to the morning time for the total championship time.
William Smith is back on the water when the Herons co-host the HWS Challenge on the Canal on Oct. 14.
