Heron crew reaches grand finals at States

May 6, 2006

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—The William Smith crew team advanced all three of its entries to the grand finals at the New York State Championships today. The Herons will compete for the state title in the varsity eight, the second varsity eight and the novice eight events tomorrow.

The varsity eight of Kenzie Cannon, Rebecca Gutwin, Frances Parsons, Hannah Gallup, Jessica Mahon, Jenn Kirst, Nicole Balsamo, Edwina Wilson, and Kerry O'Neill executed a controlled race plan in their opening heat, finishing third in 7:10.5. The Herons conserved their energy, using just enough to ensure a spot in Sunday's grand final. Division I Army won the heat, just 1.2 seconds ahead of William Smith.

The second varsity eight of Julie Kozarsky, Cassie Priest, Michelle Dodge, Lucinda Keck, Jess Wojslaw, Anne Wakeman, Susie Tarrant, Alexandra Bowers, and Emily Maguire won its heat in a time of 6:42.01, nearly nine seconds ahead of the second place boat, Ithaca C.

The Heron novice eight of Caitlin Holtz, Alex Haack, Hannah Zale, Alice Bellone, Christa Hibbard, Becky Gosse, Emily Helstowski, Allison Glueck, and Katherine Faherty placed third in its heat logging a time of 7:37.31. The Black Knights won the heat in a time of 7:15.97.
