Heron crew wins gold, silver at States

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—The William Smith crew team won a gold and a silver medal in today's finale of the New York State Rowing Championships. The Heron second varsity eight brought home the top prize, while the varsity eight won the silver medal.
The second varsity eight of Julie Kozarsky, Cassie Priest, Michelle Dodge, Lucinda Keck, Jess Wojslaw, Anne Wakeman, Susie Tarrant, Alexandra Bowers, and Emily Maguire enjoyed an open-water victory over runner-up Ithaca B. William Smith crossed the line in 7:06.8, nearly nine seconds ahead of the Bombers. Rochester turned in a third place showing.
The varsity eight of Kenzie Cannon, Rebecca Gutwin, Frances Parsons, Hannah Gallup, Jessica Mahon, Jenn Kirst, Nicole Balsamo, Edwina Wilson, and Kerry O'Neill navigated the 2,000-meter course in 6:59.6. Only Ithaca produced a faster time (6:51.9). The Bombers are the defending national champions and ranked first in the latest NCAA regional poll, while the Herons are No. 2.

The Herons are back on the water on May 13-14 in the ECAC Championships in Worcester, Mass.
