Heron varsity 8 honored by Liberty League

April 3, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith varsity eight was named the Liberty League Women’s Crew Boat of the Week this afternoon.

The Herons’ top eight comprised of first-year Kenzie Cannon (Berkshire/Canaan, Conn.), sophomore Hannah Gallup (Holy Names/Alameda, Calif.), sophomore Jessica Mahon (Rhinebeck/Rhinebeck, N.Y.), senior Cassie Priest (King & Low-Heywood Thomas/Stamford, Conn.), junior Nicole Balsamo (Newton Country Day/Centerville, Mass.), senior Rebecca Gutwin (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.), first-year Kerry O’Neill (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), senior Edwina Wilson (Churchill/Westport, Conn.), and senior Frances Parsons (Hoosac School/Liverpool, N.Y.) opened the season with an impressive win over Rochester and Rensselaer. The Herons crossed the finish line in 7:16.55, more than eight seconds ahead of the Yellowjackets and nearly a minute in front of the Red Hawks.

The following weekend William Smith tangled with the defending national champions, the Ithaca Bombers. The Herons lowered their 2,000-meter time to 7:13.1, but the Bombers won the opening heat by 12 seconds.

Following a week off, William Smith will be back on the water on April 15, when the Herons host RIT. Racing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
