Herons host RIT in day of racing
April 15, 2006
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith crew teams hosted RIT in a day of racing on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal today.
In the varsity eight race, William Smith’s top boat of Kenzie Cannon, Rebecca Gutwin, Frances Parsons, Hannah Gallup, Jess Mahon, Kathryn Priest, Nicole Balsamo, Jenn Kirst, and Kerry O’Neill enjoyed an open water win over RIT, covering the 2,000-meter course in 7:25.9. The Herons’ second varsity eight of Julie Kozarsky, Edwina Wilson, Susan Tarrant, Alex Haack, Christa Hibbard, Kathryn Loddengaard, Jess Wojslaw, Alexandra Bowers, and Michelle Dodge was next across the line in 7:47.2, but a 10 second penalty for missing a buoy on the course, put the boat in third place behind RIT.
RIT’s varsity four outlasted the William Smith boat of Kozarsky, Wilson, Tarrant, Bowers, and Dodge, defeating the Herons by 7.7 seconds (8:31.1-8:38.8).
William Smith won the second varsity four race by the widest margin of the day, posting a 28-second victory over RIT, an advantage that expanded by 10 seconds by the Tigers failure to negotiate one of the course buoys. The Herons won in 8:14.3.
William Smith is back on the water April 22, when the Herons compete in Saratoga Springs.
