GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College crew team is ranked second in the latest edition of the NCAA Division III Women’s New York region poll, up three spots from last week. The Heron varsity eight also holds down the No. 2 spot in the regional ranking of varsity eights.

William Smith has won three of the four Liberty League Boat of the Week awards heading into the conference championships in Saratoga Springs this weekend. One of the top leagues in the nation, the Herons’ quest for its second conference crown will come against the region’s elite squads. The Liberty League also includes No. 3 St. Lawrence University and No. 4 Vassar College. William Smith claimed the inaugural Liberty League title in 2004, while last season’s conference championships were cancelled due to inclement weather.

On April 22, William Smith competed on Fish Creek, the site of the Liberty League Regatta, against Middlebury College, the University of Vermont, and Skidmore College. The Herons won five of the day’s six races and finishing second in the sixth. In a Liberty League preview, the varsity eight crossed the finish line in a time of 7:16.06, outdistancing the Thoroughbreds on their home course by 18.36 seconds.
