Herons sweep crew opener

March 25, 2006

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith crew team posted wins in all four races this morning, besting boats from Rochester and Rensselaer. The Herons navigated the calm waters of the Seneca-Cayuga Canal with relative ease, sporting a more than eight-second advantage in the closest race of the day.

Kenzie Cannon, Hannah Gallup, Jessica Mahon, Cassie Priest, Nicole Balsamo, Edwina Wilson, Kerry O’Neill, Rebecca Gutwin, and Frances Parsons pulled the varsity eight home in 7:16.55, 8.74 seconds ahead of runner-up Rochester. The Yellowjackets got off the start line strong and ran bow to bow with the Herons through the first 1,000 meters, but the Herons proved to be the stronger boat, buying some breathing room in the second half of the race.

William Smith’s second varsity eight of Julie Kozarsky, Alex Haack, Susan Tarrant, Jenn Kirst, Hannah Zale, Kathryn Loddengaard, Emily Maguire, Alexandra Bowers, and Michelle Dodge enjoyed a multiple boat length lead at the finish line, but the Herons were docked 10 seconds for passing one of the course buoys on the wrong side. The penalty reduced their winning time from 7:39.14 to 7:49.14, still well ahead of second place Rochester (7:58.88).

The novice eight race belonged to William Smith as Caitlin Holtz, Anne Wakeman, Hannah Zale, Alice Bellone, Becky Gosse, Emily Helstowski, Christa Hibbard, Katherine Faherty, and Maguire enjoyed an open-water victory. The Herons posted a winning time of 8:08.31. Second place Rensselaer crossed the line in 8:50.31.

William Smith saved its best for last as the varsity four recorded the most lopsided win of the day. Cannon, Priest, Wilson, Gutwin, and Parsons covered the course in 8:08.13, more than 47 seconds ahead of the Red Hawks.

The Herons will be back on the water on April 1, when they travel to Ithaca to face the Bombers and the Marist Red Foxes. Racing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
