Varsity 4 takes home top honors at WPI
April 23, 2006
WORCESTER, Mass.—The William Smith College crew team completed a busy weekend with a victory in the varsity four, while placing second in two other events this morning on Lake Quinsigamond at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Powered by Kenzie Cannon, Cassie Priest, Nicole Balsamo, Edwina Wilson, and Kerry O'Neil, the varsity four outlasted four other teams to collect the Herons sole win. William Smith covered the 2,000 meter course in a time of 7:59.10, defeating its closest competitor, RIT, by nearly six seconds. Seven days prior, the Tigers crossed the finish line 7.7 seconds ahead of the varsity four.
In the varsity eight race, the Herons top boat of Cannon, Rebecca Gutwin, Frances Parsons, Priest, Jess Mahon, Wilson, Balsamo, Jenn Krist, and O’Neil turned in a third place showing. Tufts took home top honors with a time of 6:51.08, while William Smith crossed the finish line at 7:02.62. The varsity eight finished well ahead of both RIT and RPI.
Fueled by Julie Kozarsky, Lucinda Keck, Michelle Dodge, Anne Wakeman, Jess Wojslaw, Kathryn Loddengaard, Susie Tarrant, Alexandra Bowers, and Emily Maguire, the second varsity eight placed second with a time of 7:20.60, just seven seconds off the pace set by Tufts A boat (7:13.5).
The novice eight earned William Smith’s other second place showing. Caitlin Holtz, Alex Haack, Hannah Zale, Alice Bellone, Christa Hibbard, Becky Gosse, Emily Helstowski, Allison Glueck, and Katherine Faherty crossed the finish line with a time of 8:07.51, trailing Tufts but well ahead of RPI.
William Smith is back on the water on April 29, when the Herons travel to Skidmore for the 2006 Liberty League Championships.
