GENEVA, N.Y.—Seven student-athletes on the William Smith College crew team recently were named to the 2006 Liberty League Women’s Crew All-Academic team. Seniors Rebecca Gutwin (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.) and Frances Parsons (Hoosac School/Liverpool, N.Y.), juniors Nicole Balsamo (Newton Country Day/Centerville, Mass.), Lauren Brady (Westover School/Ridgefield, Conn.), Michelle Dodge (St. Paul’s School/Jackson, N.H.), Kathryn Loddengaard (Hampton Bay/Hampton Bay, N.Y.), and Cristina Mulcahy (St. Michaels/Santa Fe, N.M.) represented the Herons based on their outstanding efforts in the classroom and on the water.

Balsamo, a psychology major, Gutwin, a mathematics major, and Parsons, a critical social studies major, are key components of William Smith’s varsity eight. On April 29, the Herons earned top honors at the Liberty League Championships, besting the competition by 12 points. The four-time Liberty League Boat of the Week covered the 2,000 meter course in a time of 6:53.92, outdistancing Vassar by more than seven seconds.

Powered by Dodge, an environmental studies and English double major, and Loddengaard, a geoscience and environmental studies double major, the second varsity eight also was victorious at the conference championships. Their boat crossed the finish line in a time of 7:04.3, defeating second place St. Lawrence by 18 seconds.

A political science major, Brady is participating in the international study program this semester in France. In the fall, she raced in the varsity eight. On Oct. 23, the varsity eight earned a seventh place showing out of 46 boats at the annual Head of the Charles in Boston. One of the toughest courses in the nation, the Herons bested conference rivals Vassar, Skidmore, Union, and St. Lawrence.

Mulcahy is also participating in the international study program this semester in London.

William Smith is back on the water on April 29, when the Herons travel to Whitney Point for the 2006 New York State Championships.
