Heron crew moves up in national rankings
April 25, 2007
GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College crew team’s varsity eight moved up one spot in this week’s Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) national poll. The Herons, ranked third last week, are now the second-ranked team in Division III.
With two open-water wins last weekend, including a key win against regional opponents, the Herons’ varsity eight proved they are one of the top teams in the country. Easily cruising past Skidmore, Middlebury, and Rensselaer on Saturday, the boat recorded a time of seven minutes and 10 seconds, 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. William Smith went on to row past Tufts, Washington (Md.) College, WPI, RIT, and the Red Hawks the next day, finishing the 2,000 meter course in a time of 6:52, seven seconds ahead of the runner-up.
The varsity eight consists of Kenzie Cannon, Hannah Gallup, Nicole Balsamo, Anne Wakeman, Lauren Brady, Lucinda Keck, Kerry O’Neill, Jenn Kirst, and Michelle Dodge.
The Herons will look to capture their third league title when they travel to Canton, N.Y., to compete in the Liberty League Championships on April 28. Racing is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
