Heron crew wins 3rd league title

WADDINGTON, N.Y.—The William Smith College crew team won its third Liberty League title today on the St. Lawrence River. The Herons’ varsity eight, ranked first in New York State and second in the country, led the way with an impressive win in its race.

Powered by Kenzie Cannon, Hannah Gallup, Nicole Balsamo, Anne Wakeman, Lauren Brady, Lucinda Keck, Kerry O’Neill, Jenn Kirst, and Michelle Dodge, the varsity eight bested five other boats, including second-place Skidmore, in a time of six minutes, seven seconds. The Thoroughbreds finished over 11 seconds behind the Herons in the Grand Final.
The William Smith second varsity eight raced against the varsity eights today, and finished second in the Petite Final, edging Union’s V8+ by a mere .48 seconds. The 2V8+ crew was made up of Julie Kozarsky, Christa Hibbard, Jessica Wojslaw, Alexandra Bowers, Emily Maguire, Kathryn Loddengaard, Cristina Mulcahy, Becky Gosse, and Katherine Faherty.
Also tallying points towards the Herons’ overall score was the novice eight. The boat finished third with a time of 6:41.45, behind St. Lawrence and Hamilton, and was manned by Abbie DiPalma, Kirsten Cooper, Meghan Cox, Jamie Billington, Kristin Yerkie, Laura Valdmanis, Mianna Molinari, Catherine Patterson, and Patricia Stacey.
William Smith, also ranked first in New York State as a team, will be back in action on May 5-6 when it takes to the water at the New York State Championships in Whitney Point, N.Y.
