Heron novice eight wins Boat of the Week award

Liberty League logoGENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith crew team’s novice eight earned its first win of the season on Saturday, outlasting Grand Valley State, and earned the Liberty League Boat of the Week award for its efforts.

The Herons had an impressive open water win over the Lakers, finishing with a time of 9:10.96, more than four seconds ahead of GVSU (9:15.26). The boat was one of three from William Smith that recorded a victory on the day.

The novice eight was powered from cox to bow by first-years Abbie DiPalma (Portsmouth Abbey School/Middleton, R.I.), first-year Jamie Billington (Rye/Rye, N.Y.), sophomore Kristen Yerkie (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/Vernon, N.Y.), first-year Kirsten Cooper (Atholton/Columbia, Md.), first-year Meghan Cox (Perry/Perry, N.Y.), first-year Laura Valdmanis (Prior Lake/Prior Lake, Minn.), first-year Patricia Stacey (Lake Forest Academy/Canton, Mich.), first-year Catharine Patterson (Germantown Academy/Lansdale, Pa.), and first-year Mianna Molinario (Sayville/Sayville, N.Y.).

The Herons will be back on the water on April 14 when they travel to Bucknell. Racing will begin at 8:20 a.m.
