Heron varsity 8 wins Liberty League award

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College crew team’s varsity eight was named the Liberty League Boat of the Week this afternoon. On Sunday, the Herons won a gold medal at the New York State Rowing Championships on Whitney Point Lake.
Ranked second in the nation, William Smith was the only crew to cross the finish line in under seven minutes. Sophomore Kenzie Cannon (Berkshire/Canaan, Conn.), junior Hannah Gallup (Holy Names/Alameda, Calif.), senior Nicole Balsamo (Newton Country Day/Centerville, Mass.), sophomore Anne Wakeman (Lawrence Academy/Marlboro, Mass.), senior Lauren Brady (Westover School/Ridgefield, Conn.), junior Lucinda Keck (The Lawrenceville School/Pennington, N.J.), sophomore Kerry O’Neill (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), junior Jenn Kirst (Principia/Darien, Conn.), and senior Michelle Dodge (St. Paul’s School/Jackson, N.H.) covered the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 56.5 seconds. Ithaca was second, 6.1 seconds back, followed by Skidmore, RIT, Rochester, and Army.
The state championship was the Herons’ first in that event since 2000.
William Smith is back on the water of Whitney Point Lake on May 12-13 in the ECAC Rowing Championships.
