Heron varsity eight ranked 10th in Division III

March 20, 2007

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College crew team’s varsity 8+ boat is ranked 10th in Division III, according to the preseason Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing Varsity 8 Coaches poll.

“The Herons had a very fast fall, which included defeating second-ranked Ithaca at the Head of the Genesee,” said Head Coach Sandra Chu. “The next few weeks should show more accurately where the schools stand. We’re looking forward to opening our season.”

The William Smith varsity 8 boat is powered from cox to bow by sophomore Kenzie Cannon (Berkshire/Canaan, Conn.), junior Hannah Gallup (Holy Names/Alameda, Calif.), senior Nicole Balsamo (Newton Country Day/Centerville, Mass.), junior Lucinda Keck (The Lawrenceville School/Pennington, N.J.), senior Lauren Brady (Westover School/Ridgefield, Conn.), sophomore Christa Hibbard (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.), sophomore Kerry O’Neill (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), sophomore Anne Wakeman (Lawrence Academy/Marlboro, Mass.), and senior Michelle Dodge (St. Paul’s School/Jackson, N.H.). In the fall they earned two Liberty League Boat of the Week awards, finished first at the HWS Challenge on the Canal, and took an impressive fourth place of 22 at the Head of the Fish.

Williams sits at No. 1 in the poll, while Ithaca and Colby round out the top three. Only two other Liberty League teams were ranked, No. 14 Vassar and No. 15 Hamilton.

The Herons will open their spring season on March 24 when they host Rochester and Rensselaer at 10 a.m.
