Herons place 5th in NCAA Grand Final

OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—The William Smith varsity eight finished fifth out of six boats in the grand final of the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships. The Herons took sixth place in the team standings.
William Smith was third through the 500-meter mark, but posted the slowest split through the second 500-meters, fading to fifth place. The Herons were never able to recover, finishing the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 59.2 seconds.
The Heron varsity eight was powered by sophomore coxswain Kenzie Cannon (Berkshire/Canaan, Conn.), junior stroke Hannah Gallup (Holy Names/Alameda, Calif.), senior Nicole Balsamo (Newton Country Day/Centerville, Mass.), sophomore Anne Wakeman (Lawrence Academy/Marlboro, Mass.), senior Lauren Brady (Westover School/Ridgefield, Conn.), junior Lucinda Keck (The Lawrenceville School/Pennington, N.J.), sophomore Kerry O’Neill (Brighton/Rochester, N.Y.), junior Jenn Kirst (Principia/Darien, Conn.), and senior bow Michelle Dodge (St. Paul’s School/Jackson, N.H.).
Williams College won the grand final in 6:49.15 and captured the overall team championship. Trinity (Conn.) College and Bates College were second and third, respectively, in both the grand final and team standings.
William Smith was making its sixth NCAA Rowing Championship appearance and first since finishing third in 2002.
