#8 Herons row past #2 Bombers

April 1, 2007

ITHACA, N.Y.—The William Smith crew team took two of three races from Ithaca College on Saturday morning. The Herons took the marquee showdown between the nationally ranked varsity eights.

The Bombers, ranked second in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, had William Smith's number over the past five seasons, but the eighth-ranked Herons proved fastest on this day. Kenzie Cannon, Hannah Gallup, Nicole Balsamo, Anne Wakeman, Lauren Brady, Christa Hibbard, Kerry O’Neill, Lucinda Keck, and Michelle Dodge powered William Smith over the 2,000-meter course in 7:21.6. Ithaca crossed the line more than four seconds later in 7:26.1.

The Herons also captured the second varsity eight race, besting the Bombers by more than 10 seconds. Julie Kozarsky, Alexandra Bowers, Emily Maguire, Jenn Kirst, Cristina Mulcahy, Kathryn Loddengaard, Meghan Cox, Becky Gosse, and Katherine Faherty brought William Smith across the line in 7:48.5.

Ithaca won the novice eight race. Times are not available from that race.

The Herons also faced fourth-ranked Trinity (Conn.) in separate races in the afternoon. The Bantams won the varsity (7:41.56 vs. 7:52.68), second varsity (8:03.03 vs. 8:08.22), and novice eight races.

William Smith is back on the water on April 7, when the Herons host Dowling and Grand Valley State on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal.
