William Smith V8+ wins again
April 23, 2007
WORCESTER, Mass.—The William Smith College crew team made a strong statement on Sunday when it raced against regional opponents at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The third-ranked varsity eight and novice eight both recorded open water wins.
In its second victory in as many days, the varsity eight rowed past Tufts, Washington (Md.) College, WPI, RIT, and Rensselaer with a time of six minutes, 52 seconds. Powered by Kenzie Cannon, Hannah Gallup, Nicole Balsamo, Anne Wakeman, Lauren Brady, Lucinda Keck, Kerry O’Neill, Jenn Kirst, and Michelle Dodge, the boat posted a seven-second lead over the second-place Jumbos.
“The varsity eight’s third-place national ranking has been based on very limited results,” said Head Coach Sandra Chu. “We wanted to go to Worcester to race against crews in other regions to show that our ranking is well-earned. They raced with the most confidence I’ve seen this season.”
William Smith’s novice eight also recorded a win, finishing 9.88 seconds ahead of the Shorewomen and 42.03 seconds in front of the Red Hawks.
The second varsity eight came in third in its race, finishing in a time of 7:37.39, 12 seconds behind the winners from Washington.
The Herons will be back in action on April 28 when they travel to Canton, N.Y., for the Liberty League Championships. Racing is set to begin at 8 a.m.
