Heron crew places 6th at Stonehurst

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--The William Smith College crew opened the 2002-03 season with a sixth place finish in the Stonehurst Regatta. The Herons, who placed ninth overall, turned in a weighted championship time of 34 minutes, 12.23 seconds.

"I'm extremely proud of our effort today," said first-year Head Coach Sandra Chu. "This was a good warm up for us heading into the prestigious Head of the Charles."

In a two race format, William Smith covered the 5-kilometer morning course in 18 minutes, 18.53 seconds, and the 1,500-meter afternoon course in 5 minutes, 17.90 seconds.

Senior coxswain Heather Hawkins (Shattuck-St. Mary's School/Eagan, Minn.), juniors Ashley Bergland (St. Andrew's School/Houston, Texas), Julie Deprez (The Bancroft School/Paxton, Mass.), and Alexandra Kuser (The Peddie School/Bordentown, N.J.), sophomores Penelope Davenport (St. Andrew's School (Del.)/Upperville, Va.), Anne Molholm (Bishop Watterson/Dublin, Ohio), and Sarah Powell (Mt. Lebanon/Pittsburgh, Pa.), and first-years Katherine Priest (King & Low-Heywood Thomas School/Stamford, Conn.), and Jamie Taylor (Huntington/Huntington, N.Y.) represented the Herons in the first varsity eight.

William Smith's second varsity eight finished 20th in the collegiate division and 24th overall with a time of 37 minutes, 22.71 seconds.

Harvard won the open division (31:55.29), while RIT won the collegiate division (33:24.29).
