Herons 3rd in 1st DIII championship

INDIANAPOLIS--The William Smith College crew finished third in the first NCAA Division III Rowing Championship, hosted by Indiana University. The Herons finished second in the grand final and fourth (10th overall) in the petite final.

In the grand final, William Smith led through the first 1,500 meters, but couldn't hold off the hard charging Williams team over the final 500 meters, finishing just three tenths of a second behind the Ephs (7:15.89). The Herons earned their spot in the grand final with the fastest qualifying time yesterday, edging Williams by five tenths of a second.

In the petite final, William Smith finished fourth, improving two places on their qualifing position. The Herons covered the 2,000-meter course in 7:44.57.

Williams College was the overall winner, finishing first in the grand final and second in the petite final, while Colby College was second (4th and 1st).
