August 6, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College Crew Head Coach Sandra Chu recently announced the appointment of Katie Gill to serve as the Herons’ assistant coach for the 2003-04 season. A recent graduate of the University of Brock, in St. Catherines, Ontario, Gill was a four-year member of the Badgers’ rowing team.

“We are delighted that Katie is joining our staff,” Chu said. “She has a wealth of experience and a high-energy level that will fit in well here.”

A sports management major, Gill was a member of the 2002 varsity crew that won the Ontario University Championships and competed at the Head of the Charles Regatta. A native of St. Catherines, she has completed the US Rowing and Canadian Rowing Level 2 Coaching Certification classes, as well as the 3M Canada National Coaching Certification Level 1 course.

Gill has rowed for the St. Catherines Rowing Club since 1994, in addition to rowing while in high school.

Prior to coming to joining the William Smith coaching staff, Gill coached and managed at the St. Catherine’s Rowing Club. She has volunteered at Saratoga Springs Rowing Association in Saratoga, N.Y., and coached at Ridley College, also in St. Catherines. She began her coaching career at West Springfield High School in Springfield, Va.

“I’m excited to begin my coaching career in earnest at a college with such a great reputation in academics and crew,” Gill said.
