Deprez, Hawkins garner All-America accolades

June 16, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior coxswain Heather Hawkins (Shattuck-St. Mary’s School/Eagan, Minn.) and junior rower Julie Deprez (The Bancroft School/Paxon, Mass.) recently were named to the 2003 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-America second-team. Both members of the Heron varsity eight, they are the first two-time All-Americans in the history of the William Smith crew, after earning first-team honors last season.

Hawkins was named the 2003 Weiskittel Award winner, given to the MVP of the William Smith crew. During her career, the Herons earned a berth in the NCAA Championship Regatta twice, including a third place finish in the inaugural Division III event in 2002. William Smith also competed in the all-divisions championship in 2000.

Deprez received the 2002 William Smith Crew Coach’s Award for her dedication and her work ethic. In addition to last season’s NCAA third place showing, Deprez has helped the Herons successfully defend the Seneca Cup—the annual race between William Smith and Colgate University—three times.

Over the past four seasons, the William Smith crew program has had seven student-athletes named to the CRCA All-America teams.
