Heron varsity-8 advances to ECAC NIR semifinals

WORCESTER, Mass.--The William Smith College varsity eight advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships with a fourth place finish in its preliminary heat.

The Herons covered the 2,000-meter Lake Quinsigamond course in a time of 7:24.39. Smith College won the heat in a time of 7:14.49, followed by the University of Dayton and WPI. William Smith exectued a controlled shutdown near the end of the race to conserve energy for Sunday's semifinals. The top three boats in that race will advance to the grand final.

William Smith's novice eight also competed on Saturday. The Herons did not advance to the semifinals. The novice eight logged a time of 7:55.2 and will compete in Sunday's third level final.

The Herons second varsity eight will compete in its first race Sunday morning.
