GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith crew team hosted Division I Colgate University this morning in the annual Seneca Cup on the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. The Raiders outraced the Herons in both the first varsity eight and second varsity eight to capture their second consecutive Seneca Cup.

“The William Smith crews showed great heart today,” said Head Coach Sandra Chu. “In particular the 2V8 improved its overall hull speed by about 20 seconds, which is a very difficult feat.”

After getting a late start due to heave fog, William Smith first varsity eight came out strong but could not hold off Colgate, crossing the line in 7:49.75, eight second behind the Raiders Racing for the Herons were first-year coxswain Jess Hardy (Shrewsbury/Shrewsbury, Mass.), sophomore eight seat Rebecca Gutwin (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.), sophomore seventh seat Edwina Wilson (Churchill/Bethesda, Md.), senior sixth seat Libby Weick (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.), senior fifth seat Julie Deprez (The Bancroft School/Paxton, Mass.), sophomore fourth seat Cassie Priest (King & Low-Heywood Thomas School/Stamford, Conn.), senior third seat Lauren Ulvestad (Breck School/Shorewood, Minn.), sophomore second seat Frances Parsons (Hoosac School/Liverpool, N.Y.), junior bow Lisa White (Deering/Portland, Maine).

In the only other race of the day, the second varsity eight turned in a strong performance, finishing with a runner-up time of 8:01.39, nearly 16 seconds faster than a week ago. Colgate covered the 1,500 meters in 7:56.47.

The 2V was comprised of sophomore coxswain Amanda Jantzi (Tonawanda/Tonawanda, N.Y.), junior eight seat Sarah Powell (Mt. Lebanon/Pittsburgh, Pa.), first-year seventh seat Laura Batchelor (Brookline/Brookline, Mass.), first-year sixth seat Susan Hendrickson (Hanover/Wrj, Vt.), sophomore fifth seat Susie Tarrant (Kimball Union Academy/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), first-year fourth seat Liz Staino (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), first-year third seat Nicole Balsamo (Newton Country Day School/Centerville, Mass.), first-year second seat Michelle Dodge (St. Paul’s School/Jackson, N.H.), and senior bow Colleen Franz (Nichols School/Derby N.Y.).

“I am really proud of the aggressiveness we showed against some tough competition and look forward to taking our changes into the UCAA Championship next week,” said Chu.

The Herons hit the water again on April 24, at the UCAA Championships in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
