Herons place 4 rowers on All-America teams

June 21, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association’s 2002 All-America teams include four William Smith College rowers, including three first-team selections. Junior Heather Hawkins (Shattuck-St. Mary’s/Eagan, Minn.) and sophomores Julie Deprez (Bancroft School/Paxton, Mass.) and Libby Weick (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) garnered first-team recognition, while first-year Sarah Pomeroy (Simsbury/W. Simsbury, Conn.) was named to the second-team.

Prior to this season, the Herons boasted only one All-American, Derith Hart ’01, a second-team honoree in 2000.

Deprez, Weick, and Pomeroy all rowed in William Smith’s varsity boat, while Hawkins served as the coxswain. The Herons competed in the inaugural NCAA Division III Rowing Championship earlier this month in Indianapolis. The varsity boat qualified for the Grand Final with the fastest 2,000-meter time in the prelims, edging eventual national champion Williams College by five tenths of a second. In the Grand Final, the Herons took second place, three tenths of a second behind the Ephs. Combined with the junior varsity’s fourth place finish in the Petite Final, William Smith finished third in the overall standings.

At William Smith’s annual athletics awards dinner, Weick was named the team’s most valuable rower, while Deprez received the Crew Coach’s Award for her outstanding dedication and work ethic.
