William Smith novices end fall season with style

October 27, 2003

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith novice crew team ended its fall season in style with a first place finish at the Wylie Coyote Chase on Oct. 26. The Herons top novice 8+ crossed the line in 18:01, 61 seconds ahead of its next closest competitor Colgate. Ithaca rounded out the top three boats with a time of 19:23.

“The first novice eight decisively put the team on the map,” Head Coach Sandra Chu said. “Beating Colgate, which is a Division I program, and rival Ithaca by such a lengthy margin, sets us up well for our racing season in the spring.

Racing three boats in the competition, William Smith captured the 10th and 15th spots in the 17-team regatta.

The first boat was powered from cox to bow by Chequira Christie (F.H. LaGuardia/Queens, N.Y.), Lindsay Sprague (Marcellus/Marcellus, N.Y.), Lindsay Button (Pembroke Academy/Pembroke, N.H.), Carrie Miller (Belmont/Belmont, Mass.), Katie Smith (Cheshire/Cheshire, Conn.), Patricia Del Pilar (New York City Museum School/New York, N.Y.), Eileen Casey (Hoosick Falls Central/Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), Liz Cost (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.), Allie Clark (Milton Academy/Vineyard Haven, Mass.).
