Row for Humanity exceeds goal

Hobart and William Smith students raised more than $30,000 to benefit Habitat for Humanity and the Colleges' rowing teams in the annual Row for Humanity. |

GENEVA, N.Y.—The second annual Row for Humanity fundraiser at Hobart and William Smith exceeded it’s goal of $30,000 organizer and William Smith Crew Head Coach Sandra Chu announced today. The event, which originated on the Kansas State University campus in 1995, benefits Habitat for Humanity and the Colleges’ crew teams.
Seventy-nine participants rowed a combined total of 1,020,044 meters from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., on Jan. 28, raising $30,272.72. Each participant rowed for a continuous hour on an ergometer, raising dollars for their efforts. Hobart and William Smith students who are members of Habitat for Humanity rowed exclusively for Habitat, while members of the Colleges’ crew teams shared a portion of their proceeds with Habitat.
Hobart sophomore rower Gardner Loring (Middlesex/Duxbury, Mass.) raised the most money for this year’s event with a total of $1,400 in donations. Senior rower Lauren Ulvestad (Breck School/Shorewood, Minn.) led William Smith students, raising $1,185.
Two William Smith students broke event records for meters rowed. First-year rower Nicole Balsamo (Newton Country Day School/Centerville, Mass.) broke the novice woman’s record by 47 meters, rowing 14,191, while junior Jamie Pullman (Campbellsville, Ky.) broke the Habitat for Humanity women’s record, pulling 12,686 meters, 1,127 meters past the old record.
