May 26, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—Three members of the William Smith College crew team were named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athletes. Junior Lisa White (Deering/Portland, Maine) and sophomores Rebecca Gutwin (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.) and Frances Parsons (Hoosac School/Liverpool, N.Y.) represent the Herons.

To earn a place on the CRCA National Scholar-Athlete team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, be a sophomore, and compete in her institution’s varsity boat for 75 percent of the spring races.

Named the Evaleen C. Harrison ’19 Scholar-Athlete Award winner, White helped William Smith capture the inaugural UCAA Rowing Championship this season as the bow in the varsity eight boat. A double major in environmental studies and biology with a minor in Spanish, she has twice been named to the Dean’s List.

A CRCA All-American, Gutwin stroked the Herons’ varsity boat all season helping the team win the first UCAA Championship. She is majoring in math and holds the highest GPA on the squad and participates in community service projects on a weekly basis.

The second seat in the varsity eight for much of the season, Parsons is a double major in dance and critical studies. She joined the top boat this year after spending her first year as a member of the second varsity crew.
