Varsity eight advances to grand final

May 2, 2004

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—In a very shortened first day of racing at the New York State Championships, the William Smith College varsity eight earned the runner-up spot in their heat to earn a spot in the grand final. The Herons finished 13 seconds behind Buffalo to advance with Ithaca, Vassar, Marist, Colgate and Buffalo to the grand final tomorrow.

All other racing including heats for the first novice 8 and finals for the second varsity and second novice eights were postponed until tomorrow due to high winds and dangerous water conditions.

"We did exactly what we set out to do and enjoyed being able to shut down our race plan after the first 500,”said Head Coach Sandra Chu. Our goal was to come in second in our heat and advance to the grand final while executing our strategy of conserving energy for the grand final the next day. The team raced reasonably well in the extremely rough conditions. Waves were breaking over the gunwales and one boat swamped in the first heat. We look forward to showing our mettle tomorrow."
