Varsity eight reaches NCAA Final May 31, 2002 INDIANAPOLIS--On the first day of June, the William Smith varsity eight will vie for the first NCAA Division III National Championship. Contested at Eagle Creek Reservoir, the championship race is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. EST and will include Colby College, Ithaca College, Pacific Lutheran University, Smith College, and Williams College. The Herons earned a spot in tomorrow's historic final with a spectacular opening race. William Smith posted the fastest 2,000 meters of the afternoon, 7:11.50. The Herons needed every bit of their one and a half boat length lead at the race's midpoint, to hold off top-ranked Williams by five-tenths of a second. Senior Lemore Amir (W. Windsor-Plainsboro/Plainsboro, N.J.), junior Heather Hawkins (Shattuck-St. Mary's/Eagan, Minn.), sophomores Ashley Bergland (St. Andrew's School/Houston, Texas), Julie Deprez (Bancroft School/Paxton, Mass.), Colleen Franz (Nichols/Derby, N.Y.), Lexie Kuser (Peddie School/Bordentown, N.J.), and Libby Weick (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.), and first-years Anne Molholm (Bishop Watterson/Dublin, Ohio) and Sarah Pomeroy (Simsbury/W. Simsbury, Conn.) comprise William Smith's varsity eight. The Herons' second varsity eight finished sixth in its opening heat and
