Weick and Gutwin named CRCA All-Americans

Libby Weick

May 26, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Libby Weick (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) and sophomore Rebecca Gutwin (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.) were named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-America first and second-teams, respectively. Weick also received first-team recognition in 2002 to become just the third two-time All-American in the history of William Smith crew.

William Smith’s fastest port-side oar all year, Weick was named the 2004 Weiskittel Award winner, given to the most outstanding oarswoman. As the sixth seat, she helped the Herons capture the inaugural Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Championship leading the varsity eight to a 5.4 second win over Vassar as the sixth seat. During her career, Weick helped William Smith garner a third place finish in the inaugural NCAA Division III Championship Regatta as well as other top finishes.

The varsity eight stroke, Gutwin joined the top boat this season after rowing in the second varsity eight as a first-year. After successfully battling breast cancer in her first season, Gutwin became a leader and major part of the Herons’ success. She carries the highest grade point average on the team and is one of just three underclasswomen represented on the All-America teams.

William Smith garnered the inaugural UCAA Championship, posting three victories and a runner-up finish to outscore runner-up Vassar College by six points. Nine Herons have earned CRCA All-America recognition over the past five years.
