William Smith crew defeats No. 13 Pacific Lutheran April 6, 2003 ITHACA, N.Y.Despite the unspring like weather, the William Smith College crew team opened its spring season this past weekend, racing against second-ranked Ithaca College and No. 13 Pacific Lutheran. The Herons two Varsity eight boats were unable to defeat Ithaca, but the first boat bounced back, outracing Pacific Lutheran in the next race. Following some extremely tough conditions on campus, the entire team raced with good heart, Head Coach Sandra Chu said. The womens varsity eight in particular was able to turn around after a tough loss to Ithaca and improve upon their performance as they raced against Pacific Lutheran. The first Varsity eight, comprised of sophomore Penelope Davenport (St. Andrews School/Upperville, Va.), first-year Cassie Priest (King & Low-Heywood Thomas School/Stamford, Conn.), juniors Lauren Ulvestad (Breck School/Bordentown, N.J.) and Lexie Kuser (The Peddie School/Bordentown, N.J.), senior Liz Aumand (Massena Central/Massena, N.Y.), and juniors Libby Weick (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) and Julie Deprez (The Bancroft School/Paxton, Mass.) in the one through seven seats, respectively, and junior Ashley Bergland (St. Andrews School/Houston, Texas) at stroke, and coxswain Heather Hawkins (Shattuck-St. Marys School/Eagans, Minn.), completed the course against Ithaca in 6:41.4. Just ninety minutes later the same group edged the Lutes, finishing the 2,000-meter course in 6:48.0. The second race of the day was 100 percent more aggressive and indicative of the kind of racing they are capable of and will need to continue to do throughout the season, Chu said. The second Varsity eight boat posted a strong time in the defeat against Ithaca. The group of eight rowed their way to a time of 6:48.3, eight seconds behind Ithaca. Sitting in the first through seven seats, respectively, were sophomore Sarah Powell (Mt. Lebanon/Pittsburgh, Pa.) and first-years Susie Tarrant (Kimball Union Academy/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Ashley McKay (Our Lady of Mercy/Penfield, N.Y.), Darcy Kimball (Hingham/Hingham, Mass.), Lauren Hannahs (La Guardia/Johnstown, N.Y.), Rebecca Gutwin (Champlain Valley Union/Williston, Vt.), and Frances Parsons (Hoosac School/Liverpool, N.Y.), while Sarah Mantell (DeSales/Geneva, N.Y.) was the coxswain. The Herons hit the water again on April 12, when they travel to RIT. |
