William Smith crew to open season at Ithaca
April 3, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.After months of hard work away from the water the William Smith College crew team will receive its first test this weekend when it travels to Ithaca College. Ranked fifth in the first US Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, the Herons will be going up against strong competition in the No. 2 Ithaca, the No. 13 Lutes of Pacific Lutheran, and 15th-ranked Hamilton College. The race is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Our opening race against Ithaca, Pacific Lutheran, and Hamilton will be an exciting one Head Coach Sandra Chu said. The team has been training at a high level since getting back on the water and building on our successful spring training trip to Gainesville, Ga. Sophomore Penelope Davenport (St. Andrews School/Upperville, Va.), first-year Cassie Priest (King& Low-Heywood Thomas School/Stamford, Conn.), juniors Lauren Ulvestad (Breck School/Shorewood, Minn.), Lexie Kuser (The Peddie School/Bordentown, N.J.), Libby Weick (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.), Julie Deprez (The Bancroft School/Paxton, Mass.), and Ashley Bergland (St. Andrews School/Houston, Texas), seniors Liz Aumand (Massena Central/Massena, N.Y.) and coxswain Heather Hawkins (Shattuck-St. Marys School/Eagans, Minn.) comprise the first Varsity eight boat. The Herons also will race a second Varsity eight boat as well as Novice eight and Varsity four boats. The opportunity to race cross-conference so early in the season is tremendous. Chu said. The teams focus is in the right place and we are ready to go to the line. |
