William Smith crew unable to hold off RIT

April 13, 2003

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith College crew team suffered another setback this past weekend, losing to RIT in the Varsity eight competition. Leading after 1,000 meters, the Herons were unable to hold off the Tigers posting a time of 7:34.04, just .56 slower than RIT.

“While I do not think the Varsity eight raced to their potential today, they definitely learned good lessons out on the water,” Head Coach Sandra Chu said. “To lose a race by half of a second, especially after leading at the 1,000-meter mark is disappointing but it shows how much tougher we have to be.”

The second Varsity eight had a solid race completing the 2,000-meter course in 8:08.31, over a minute faster than RIT.

“The 2V had a wonderful race, not just because they won but because they were very aggressive off the line and rowed very long,” Chu said.

Ranked seventh in the latest poll, the Herons hit the water again on April 19, when they travel to Colgate.
