GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith cross country team won the 2006 Cross Country Only Conference Championship this afternoon at the Seneca Lake State Park. The Herons placed five runners in the top 10 to edge runner up Daemen College 38-42.
Clarkson University’s Janine Laskoski was the overall winner, covering the 5-kilometer course in 19 minutes, 19 seconds. Daemen’s Rebecca Martel was second in 19:30, while Potsdam’s Kristina Soar was third in 20:24. Heron senior Leanne Roncolato (Meadville/Meadville, Pa.) was the top finisher for William Smith, coming in fourth place with a time of 20:26.
William Smith was able to capture the title, after finishing second last season, thanks to junior Morgan MacCuaig (Rutland/Mendon, Vt.), first-year Liz Mills (Tully/Lafayette, N.Y.), first-year Katie Pietrak (Nardin Academy/Amherst, N.Y.), and junior Kathleen Kohl (Pembroke/Korfu, N.Y.), who finished seventh through 10th respectively.
Clarkson finished in third place, while Utica took fourth, Potsdam placed fifth, St. John Fisher finished sixth, and Wells came in seventh.
The CCOC provides those programs without track teams a chance to measure themselves against similar programs, instead of competing against student-athletes that are coached all year long from cross country to indoor track to outdoor track.
The Herons are back in action on Nov. 4, when they travel to Williamstown, Mass., for the ECAC Championships.
